Chapter 24: His Claim
Thirty. Thirty-five. Forty.
The doors opened on the fortieth floor.
The last time I'd stood here I'd pressed the button four times with my hands shaking.
I walked past the guard's empty desk to the metal stairs.
I climbed them in flat boots this time.
I hadn't practiced a single step.
At the top, the door to the roof was propped open a crack with a brick.
I could hear voices behind it. Low ones. Somebody shushing somebody.
"Ma," I said to the door.
Total silence.
Then my mother's voice, from right on the other side: "I'm not here."
I pushed the door open.
They were all standing on the landing just inside it, crammed together.
My mother in her good coat. Rosario in his camel one, with his glasses on his head. The two aunts. Three cousins. The old uncle with the cane, sitting on the top step because there was nowhere else to put him.
"Don't mind us," Rosario said.
"You're all on a staircase."
"It's a big staircase," my mother said. "Go on. He's freezing."
I went out onto the roof.
The wind came off the river and hit me in the face, the same as in October.
But the helicopter was gone.
Rosario had sold it in January.
The big lit circle was empty, just the yellow line and the white H, and the lights all the way around the edge, every one of them on.
