Chapter 11: The Clinic Card
I did not tell Orson where I was going.
I told him I needed my mother, and he held out the car keys without a word.
She opened the door of her Evanston apartment in her robe, with a cup of tea in one hand.
"Keira." She looked at my face and set the cup down on the table by the door. "What's happened?"
"Look at me."
"I'm looking."
"Closely, Mom."
I stood in the light from her kitchen window and I let her look.
She was fifty-five years old, and she had been a school secretary for thirty years, and nothing had ever made her go pale.
She went pale.
The color left her mouth and then her cheeks, and her fingers found the back of a chair.
"Oh," she said. "Oh, honey."
"What is it?"
"Sit down."
"Tell me what it is."
"Sit down first. Please."
I sat.
She did not.
She stood at the window with her back to me, and she put her hand over her mouth.
"You were nine," she said.
I waited.
"It was the summer at the lake, with the Davenant cabins. You remember the lake."
"I remember the lake."
"One night you woke up screaming. You were burning up. Your eyes were silver, all the way round. I thought you were dying."
I could not feel my hands.
"I don't remember that."
"They made sure you wouldn't." She turned, and her face was wet. "Broderick's father came himself. The old Alpha. He stood in the doorway of our cabin in his bathrobe and looked at you on the bed, and I will never forget his face."
