Chapter 16: Broderick at the Door

My mother called while we were still in the Davenant parking structure.

"Keira." Her voice was thin and very polite. "Broderick is here. He's in my kitchen."

"Don't give him anything."

"I've made him tea," she said. "I thought you'd want to come."

Orson took the corner onto Sheridan Road so fast I felt it in my teeth.

Broderick was sitting at her kitchen table with the sling off, one hand around a cup.

My mother stood at the counter with her arms crossed over her cardigan.

A single sheet of paper lay on the table between them, and a pen sat on top of it.

He looked up when I came in, and his eyes went to Orson behind me, and he did not stand.

"Keira," he said. "Good. I was just explaining things to your mother."

"Get out of her house."

"In a minute. Sit down."

The old pressure came down on my shoulders.

It felt flat and heavy, and for a moment I thought I would fold the way I always had.

Then it shivered, and slid off.

I stayed standing.

Broderick's jaw tightened.

"Sit down," he said again, and his voice cracked in the middle.

It was the first time I had ever heard it do that.

He heard it too.

He stared into his tea, and a muscle jumped in his cheek.

"What is the paper?" I said.

My mother took a breath.

"He wants me to sign that you were always unwell," she said. "That I knew the wolf was malformed, and that his father only did what the doctors told him."
