Chapter 8: The Powder Room

I did not answer Broderick.

I turned my back on him, in front of three hundred people, and walked out of the ballroom.

Orson let me go.

He stayed where he was, at the edge of the floor, and he put himself between me and the Alpha.

I made it down the corridor to the powder room before my hands started to shake.

It was marble, with a long mirror and six brass sinks.

I held the edge of one and looked at myself.

My eyes looked ordinary, gray-green, a little wide.

I reached back and touched the nape of my neck.

The skin there was warm now, only warm, the way skin is warm.

It had hurt every single day for seven years, and now it felt like nothing at all.

I did not understand it, and I was afraid of how much I liked it.

The door opened behind me.

In the mirror I saw Blair come in, with two women from Broderick's circle on either side of her.

I knew them both.

They run the pack's charity board, and they had never once said hello to me in a hallway.

"Keira," Blair said, very gently. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine."

"You don't look fine." She stopped beside me at the next sink and set down her clutch. "You looked ill. Broderick is frantic."

"I'm sure he is."

"He thinks you've been taking something."

I turned my head.

"Excuse me?"

"Not me," Blair said, with a small helpless smile at the other women. "I would never. It's what people are saying. You left the building on Wednesday, you won't answer his calls, you show up on his rival's arm. People are saying a lot of things."
