Chapter 22: The Chair
"June DeMille," Percival said.
His voice shook, and the whole hall heard it.
"I have no chair to offer you."
"I may have no house by morning, and no name."
"I have three hundred years and a violin with a missing string."
"I like the violin," I said.
"I ask only for your leave to keep you."
Nine hundred wolves did not breathe.
I looked down at him, kneeling on the stone with his hands open on his knees.
I let him wait.
I counted three.
"You may," I said.
The noise that came out of the hall rattled the banners.
It was not a cheer.
It was lower than a cheer.
It began in the galleries and went through the floor, and it took me a moment to know it as the wolves' song.
I had heard it every full moon for four years.
I had never before heard it for me.
Percival put his forehead against my hand.
Hugh stood up.
He did not bang a gavel.
He only stood, and the song died away until the candles were loud.
