Chapter 16: One More Dose

The pack searched the lodge, the mill and the lake road all night, and found nobody.

Dane wanted me to stay in the house. I went to work.

"I'm not hiding at your kitchen table," I told him. "They'll come to me or they won't."

He sent two guards and parked them outside the clinic doors.

By ten the waiting room was full. A man with his arm in a splint was reading a hunting magazine, and a woman was trying to keep a toddler off the radiator.

I sat behind the front desk with the sign-in sheet and my mother's locket under my collar.

Carrie had stopped me twice in the hall to ask if I was all right.

I told her I was. For the first time in years, I almost meant it.

The back door of the clinic was supposed to be locked.

I smelled him before I saw him. I'd never smelled anyone through a wall before.

Sweat, fear, cheap whiskey, and underneath it, something sharp and green that made my gums ache.

Colt pushed through the staff door at the end of the desk.

His shirt was wrinkled, and there was a split in his lip. In his right hand he held a syringe.

"Nan," he said. "Don't scream."

The woman with the toddler went still. The man put down his magazine.

"I'm not going to scream, Colt."

"One dose." His hand shook so hard the plunger rattled. "Dad says one dose of this and your wolf goes back down. You're nobody's mate. You're nobody's anything."
