Chapter 16: The Porch Swing Tape
I drove to Aunt Ginny's house at noon on Friday, and I stood on her step with a cassette tape.
She opened the door in her robe with her hair flat on one side, and for once she looked her age.
"Grandpa left a tape," I said. "It says to play it for both families."
She stared at it.
"I'll listen from the car," she said.
"Then listen from the car."
At dusk she parked at the end of the lane and walked the rest, with her purse held in front of her.
Travis got out of the passenger side.
He didn't come to the porch.
He stopped in the grass at the edge of the yard and stood with his hands in his back pockets.
Colby's father and mother sat on the porch rail.
Colby sat on the steps.
I had carried Grandpa's old radio out from the kitchen, the one with the cassette deck and the cracked antenna, and plugged it into an extension cord.
Ginny took the top step, as far from the swing as she could get.
I pressed play.
There was a long hiss, and a thump, and then my grandfather's voice came out of a kitchen radio and sat down with us.
"Is it on? Colby said the red light means it's on."
Colby shut his eyes.
"Well. If you're hearing this, the supper's over. Somebody's been fed and somebody's been embarrassed. I expect I know who. Ginny, hold your horses."
Ginny made a small sound.
"Casey. You'll be mad at me, so I'll say it fast."
"I wrote the clause. I didn't write it to marry you off."
"You left at eighteen, and I never once asked you to stay. Then I got old."
