Chapter 12: The Books

My brothers came up the drive at five in the morning, in Darrell's hatchback, with the headlights still on.

I was on the cottage steps in a borrowed sweater, with my phone in my hand.

I hadn't slept.

Neither had they.

Garrison got out first.

He was wearing yesterday's quarter-zip, and his glasses were crooked.

Darrell climbed out of the passenger side and stayed by the car.

"Is he here?" Garrison asked. "Dad?"

"No."

"Did he call you?"

"No."

Garrison sat down on the bottom step as if his legs had given out.

"He took my keys at the hall," he said. "I was holding them. He walked out to the lot and got into my car and sat there for ten minutes. Then he drove."

"He doesn't drive."

"He hasn't driven since you were fourteen." Garrison pushed up his glasses. "I always thought it was a heart thing. Mom said it was his eyes. I never asked."

Cillian came across the grass with a tray of coffee.

He stopped at the bottom of the steps and looked at me.

I looked back.

"No touching," I said, very quietly.

"Understood."

"You can stay, though."

He set the tray down on the step and stood a little behind me, where I could feel him without having to turn.
