Chapter 6: Plots for Sale

The next morning I added a line to the invoice: Stairwell, Saturday, unbilled kiss, disputed.

Dell read it over my shoulder in the dorm room and made a small noise.

"You can't dispute a kiss."

"I can dispute anything. It's a free country."

"What was it like?"

"It was a kiss," I said. "It was unpaid labor."

She watched me for a moment and then pulled out her phone.

"Okay. Since you keep saying you're going to die like the girl in your dream, I took the liberty of getting quotes."

"Dell."

"A two-person plot at Fairlawn Cemetery is eighteen hundred dollars. It's near a tree."

"I'm not buying a plot."

"The engraving is four dollars a letter. Wife of Beckett Ashworth is twenty-one letters."

"That is eighty-four dollars."

"Eighty-four dollars," Dell said. "You'd save money if you went by Abby. Fewer letters."

"I'm not dying."

"I'm not saying you are. I'm saying the early-bird discount ends Friday."

I threw a sock at her.

We were still arguing about it when we crossed the quad to the library, because the early-bird discount did not seem to bother her at all.

Somebody had left a red leash across the top step.

I didn't see it.

My foot went down on the loop, the leash slid, and I came down on the side of my ankle with a noise that I felt in my teeth.

"Abby!" Dell said.

I sat on the cold stone and said a word that I won't write down.
