Chapter 22: Harvest Moon

Odell skidded into my doorway before the bell had stopped.

"Blackwater," he said, grey-faced. "All of it. Three hundred wolves at the ford with banners up, and the beacon's lit proper."

Idris's hand had tightened on the sword.

I felt his wolf rise in his chest, ready to run.

He did not move.

"Odell, send the riders to the gate," he said. "Hold the line. Do not cross it."

"That's all?" Odell said.

"No," I said.

I was already lacing my boots.

"Three hundred wolves came to take back an Alpha," I said. "They have not heard the charge."

"The Moot sits where the pack can see it."

"At the gate. With Torrance in his chains and the scribe beside him."

Idris looked at me, and something in his face settled.

"You want to try them in front of his own pack," he said.

"I want his own pack to watch him lose."

The oldest Elder agreed in under a minute.

By the time the sun cleared the pines, a table stood at the Ridge Road gate.

The three Elders sat behind it in their grey wool.

Beyond the gate, Blackwater's column stood on the road in black coats, row after row.
