Chapter 13: The Cage

"He made you swear," I said. "And you swore."

"I thought you were happy."

Cormac didn't come off the fender. He kept his arms folded and his eyes on the gravel.

"You told me you were happy," he said. "Every Sunday. I asked you straight, and you said you'd never been better."

That was true. I had said it every Sunday for four years, in a bright voice, with the bathroom door locked.

It stopped my anger for about a breath.

"I lied to you," I said.

"Yeah. I knew you weren't." He finally looked up. "He told me a year after you came. Said the Alpha's wolf had known you since you were nineteen, and that you were with Rhett by your own choice. He said if I told you, you'd feel you owed him something."

"And you believed that."

"I believed you chose Rhett. I hated it. I thought you'd picked wrong, and I thought you were old enough to pick wrong."

"Did you know the rule was fake?"

"No." His voice cracked. "Moon's honor, Bronwyn. If I'd known, I'd have put Sawyer through a wall."

I believed him. That was the worst part.

We went up to his den, and I did not sleep on the couch so much as lie on it.

At dawn someone knocked, three slow raps.

Cormac opened the door, and Torsten stood on the landing with a steel file box in both arms.

He had not shaved. He wore yesterday's shirt.

"You said tonight," he said to me, past my brother. "It's morning. I won't come in unless you tell me to."

"What's in the box?"

"Four years of rosters. You should see them, not hear about them."
