Chapter 15: The Notebook

Torsten's POV

Jodie carried the notebook up the stage steps and set it in front of the Elder.

The Elder did not touch it.

"Open it," I said.

"The Alpha is the accused," the Elder said. "He does not tell this council what to read."

"Then one of your own can." I turned to the elder on her left, a quiet man who had served three Alphas before me. "Please."

He opened it and read in silence.

I watched his face, because it told me more than the page did.

It went from puzzled to sick in under a minute.

"Read it aloud," I said.

He looked at the Elder, who looked away.

"The first entry is dated four years ago," the old man said. His voice was dry. "It says: Redmond's wolf knew her scent at the gate. He has not spoken to her. Keep it that way."

The hall was very still.

"The next. I told Redmond she asked for quiet. He thanked me. Easier than I thought."

I kept my hands flat on my knees.

"Then there are pages of signatures." The old man turned the notebook to the room. "Forty, fifty. They all say N. Harlan. They get better as they go."

Somewhere behind me, Bronwyn made a small sound.

"And this." He swallowed. "I moved her to the creek side again. She cried in the truck. Good. She's easier to keep when she is grateful."

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Rhett.

He stood at the foot of the stage with his mouth slightly open and his pale eyes on the book.

For one second he was plainly afraid of me.

My wolf wanted him.

It was a clean, simple want, and it came up through my chest, and the lamps above the stage went gold at the edges.

I felt it in my hands first.

Then I thought of her in the second row, watching, and I breathed out through my teeth and made my fingers open.
