Chapter 19: Meet the Parents

"That one," I said, pointing at Rhett in the dirt. "Before I hit him back."

My father looked at Rhett for a long moment.

Rhett had got to his knees, holding his arm. He tried to smile.

"Sir. I wrote you out of concern. She's not well, and she's been taken advantage of by a man who."

"You wrote me a letter," my father said. "I read it in the truck. Twice."

He folded it small and tucked it into Rhett's shirt pocket.

"I'm too old to hit a man who's already down. Get out of my sight."

Rhett opened his mouth.

Cormac took one step, and Rhett closed his mouth.

Two enforcers took him by the elbows. This time nobody asked the Elder.

My mother's door opened on the other side of the truck.

She was small and quick, in a green coat with her hair tied up in a scarf, and she crossed the yard at a near run.

"Let me see that eye," she said.

"Mom, it's fine."

"It isn't fine. It's the color of a plum." She took my chin in her hand and turned my face to the light. "Whoever did this, I'll have words with his mother."

"I did it back," I said. "Worse."

"Good girl."

She hugged me, hard, so my ribs creaked, and I smelled the pine soap she'd used my whole life.

For the first time in four years, I cried because I was glad.

Over her shoulder, I saw my father looking at Torsten.

Torsten had not come any closer than that pace. He stood very straight in his bloodied shirt and waited.

"You'll be the Alpha," my father said.
