Chapter 5: The Creek

Rhett recovered fast. He always did.

"I misspoke," he said. "It's not a written law. It's the Elder's custom. Everyone in enforcement knows it, and I was protecting Bronwyn from the gossip."

"The Elder doesn't make law in my pack," Torsten said.

"With respect, Alpha, she's been running the marriage politics for forty years."

"Then she can run them. She doesn't write the charter."

I stood up.

My chair hit the wall behind me, and eight heads turned.

"For four years you told me the Alpha said no," I said. "Every few months you went to ask, and every few months he said no. You told me that. You came home and told me what he said."

"Not here, Bronwyn."

"Where, then? You said not at the cabin, not at the lodge, not on a run. Here is the first room we've ever stood in together with other people in it."

"This is private."

"You said my name in front of eight wolves. It stopped being private when you did that."

Rhett looked at the Alpha. The Alpha looked at him, steady and silent, and waited.

Rhett broke first.

"We'll talk tonight," he said to me, very low. "You'll understand once you've calmed down."

He walked out. I heard his boots go down the corridor, quick and hard.

Cormac let out a long breath through his teeth.
