Chapter 6: The Drawer

"Rhett Sawyer," Jodie said, and smiled a little. "Why?"

I should have been more careful.

I could have said something light and walked away, and let her find out on a stage in front of the whole pack.

But I had spent four years letting other people not know things, and I was finished.

"Jodie, I'm so sorry," I said. "I lived with Rhett for two years. I was with him for four."

She went still.

The smile stayed on her face a moment too long, and then it slid off, and she looked very young.

"That's not funny."

"I'm not joking. I moved out yesterday. I saw the page he typed for the moot, with your name on it and a note to give you my bracelet."

"Your bracelet."

"I bought it for him. Silver, hook clasp. The date is engraved inside."

She sat very straight on the rock and stared at the creek.

I didn't say anything else. I knew better than anyone that sometimes you need a minute before you can have a feeling.

"Why would you tell me this?" she said at last. Her voice shook, but she was not crying. "You don't know me. You could be doing it for revenge."

"I could. I want to be, a little. But I don't want you standing on a stage with that man for a ceremony he's going to lie through." I took a breath. "Come with me. I'll show you."

"Show me what?"

"Everything he left in the cabin."

The cabin sat at the end of a gravel road, with the trees close on three sides and smoke from no chimney.
