Chapter 16: The Developer
Delaney stood in the gravel with a glass ring on her finger and her mouth open.
Jarrett was still on one knee.
"Baby, it's an heirloom setting," he said quickly. "The stone gets swapped next week."
"Where did you get it?"
"A jeweler in Dayton."
"Jarrett." Her voice was thin. "What did you spend the money on?"
A car turned into the lane.
It was a long gray sedan, and it did not hurry.
It stopped behind Jarrett's SUV, and two men in dark coats got out of the front.
The man in back took his time.
He was fifty, heavy in the shoulders, with a camel overcoat and a leather folder under his arm.
He looked at the suitcases, the trucks, the growers at the gate and the dozer tracks across the east field.
Then he looked at Jarrett, who was getting up off his knee.
"Mr. Pelletier," he said. "I drove from Dayton. Your phone is off."
