Chapter 22: The Divorce
The press release went out at noon, and by one o'clock everyone in the courthouse knew my name.
The clerk said it twice as I came through the metal detector.
"Mr. Kerr. The Mr. Kerr."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Courtroom Two. The judge is waiting."
Joanna came in behind me with my father and Dale.
The courtroom was full.
Growers filled the benches, and the reporter from Dayton sat in the back row with her notebook.
The judge was a gray-haired woman who had heard everything twice.
Delaney sat alone at the other table.
She had no lawyer, and she wore the same cream coat, now creased at the elbows.
She did not look at me.
"Petition for divorce, Kerr versus Kerr," the judge said. "Mr. Kerr, are you here with counsel?"
My lawyer stood up.
"We are, Your Honor."
"Mrs. Kerr, you are not represented."
"I couldn't afford it," Delaney said.
The word afford hung there.
Someone on the bench coughed.
"I've read the file," the judge said. "Petitioner states that the marriage is over. Do you contest that, Mrs. Kerr?"
