Chapter 11: Settle

Finn read the text over my shoulder.

I watched it land on him.

His arm stayed around my waist, but it went still.

"A million and a half," he said. "Who pays the half?"

"You do. The policy stops at a million."

"So they want to give her my money and call it peace."

Robbie came thumping down the dock with three lemonades in a cardboard tray.

He stopped and looked at us.

At Finn's hair, and my shirt, and how close we were standing.

"Were you kissing?"

"Robbie," Finn said.

"You were. Your face is red."

"It's a sunburn."

Robbie handed me a lemonade with great dignity.

"I'm going to sit in the car and not say anything," he announced. "For one minute."

He didn't make it half a minute.

On Tuesday the insurance company sent two lawyers to Whitford Lane.

One was old, one was young, and they had the same haircut.

Gray suits, gray ties, a deck of slides about risk.

We met in the big conference room on the fortieth floor, with the harbor out the windows.

My father sat at the head of the table.

I sat at his right.

Finn sat across from the insurance lawyers in a club polo.

He said he wasn't buying a second suit for people who wanted to sell him out.

The older one clicked to a slide with a big red number on it.

"Six million dollars," he said. "That's the exposure. A sympathetic plaintiff, a young woman with a ruined career, a jury in Manhattan. We think one and a half is a gift."

"She doesn't have a ruined career," Finn said. "She has a ring light."

"Mr. Haverty, with respect, your feelings about her social media aren't..."

"It's not my feelings. It's my floor. Nothing was wrong with my floor."
