Chapter 17: The Favor He Refused
Becca's POV
I had drawn the barn on the back of a feed receipt, and I was proud of it.
The big square held a hundred and twenty chairs, and a smaller square near the door said Welcome Table.
In the corner I had drawn a cloud labeled Weather (Becca), with a little umbrella.
Tate sat down on the step beside me and took off his hat.
He looked at the receipt for a long time, and I could tell he was reading every box.
"It's good," he said.
"It's very good," I agreed. "I made the cloud smile."
"Hallie's done," he said. "I'm off her calendar."
"Good," I said, and kept my eyes on the receipt.
"Becca, we can't host the dinner."
The cloud still seemed to be on my side.
"We've already said we would," I told him.
"You said it. I said of course. I shouldn't have."
"Why not?" I asked. "You like the barn."
"I like the barn when nobody's counting on it."
I set the receipt on my knee and smoothed it flat.
