Chapter 19: She Heard His Answer

I apologized at dawn, before the coffee, with frost still on the trailer step.

Tate had slept sitting up, with his hat over his eyes and cardboard Joelle propped against his arm.

Frost had bent her paper flag, which seemed fair.

"Good morning," he said from under the hat.

"I asked you to do it for me," I said. "That's Hallie's sentence, and I used it."

"You did," he said.

"When you said no, I decided you were leaving. You were sitting on my step all night."

"I was," he said.

"I'm sorry for both."

He tipped the hat back, and the first sun landed on his face.

"Thank you," he said, and meant it so plainly that I started to fix something.

"You could do just the tables," I said.

"No."

"The tables are the easy part. We have two."

"We have one in use and one on the porch," Tate said.

"The one on the porch is very large."

"It has a loose leaf and a grudge," he said. "No."

I folded my arms and looked across the yard for another angle.
