Chapter 20: The Dinner They Hosted Themselves

Joelle left for the airport at nine with her duffel bag, her striped hat, and a speech.

"Nobody carries anything for anybody while I'm gone," she told us beside Della's car.

She hugged me first, which I hadn't expected, and Tate second.

Cardboard Joelle stayed at the end of our drive, waving her flag at the road.

At three o'clock, the chair lenders came up our drive in a row.

"My four need to be at the hall by five," the bridge-game woman told Tate.

Tate was sitting on the porch step with his hat on his knee and his hands empty.

"Of course they do," he said, and did not get up.

The three women carried their own chairs out of our front hallway, two at a time.

It took them an hour, and the porch-supper woman dropped a cushion twice.

Each time a chair swung near a doorframe, Tate made a small noise in his throat.

He kept his hands on his knees, and I kept mine in my pockets.

By four, the chairs were gone from our hallway, and so was my urge to follow them.
