Chapter 21: A Thing at Full Price
The shop clerk asked whether we wanted the gift box, and my husband said yes.
We had come to buy one pair of salt and pepper shakers.
They were plain white ceramic with round tops, and the salt and pepper matched each other exactly.
The tag said eighteen dollars for the pair.
I had spent the whole drive rehearsing how to ask for less.
"The box is two dollars," the clerk said, ringing it up. "That makes twenty."
"No box," I told her.
"It's a nice box," Tate said.
"We're not buying the box."
"Then I'll take the box out," the clerk said, and looked at Tate with disappointment.
"I don't want you to be sad," Tate told her.
"Then you shouldn't have asked," I told him, and elbowed him gently.
"Would you like the felt travel bag?" the clerk asked next. "Three more."
"That sounds useful," Tate said.
"For salt?"
"For carrying salt."
"We carry it eleven feet from the car," I said. "It does not need a coat."
"Twenty-three, then," the clerk said, looking at Tate.
