Chapter 21: The Board

Calla touched the screen, and her grandmother's voice filled the ballroom.

"A body can always be lost, Yvette. That is the whole difficulty of you. I find that I have many friends in many hospitals."

The recording was clear and calm and unhurried.

It went on for a full minute.

When it reached the part about the lawyer being paid not to hear, someone in the third row said, "Dear God."

Calla turned the phone off.

Dorothea sat in her chair and did not speak.

The board member with the white mustache rose from the family table.

He had been kind to Yvette an hour ago, and he did not look at her now.

"Dorothea," he said. "I have known you since your wedding."

"Old friend," she said faintly.

"I move that the board refuse Alaric's resignation, and that Mrs. Stoughton be removed from the foundation tonight."

"What?"

"Alaric stays chairman. You are out." He turned to the room. "All in favor."

A hand went up, and then another.

Four of the seven proxies Dorothea had counted so carefully raised their arms.

"Carried," the old man said.

"You cannot do this," Dorothea said. "I built it. I built this room."

"You built it for the sick," Calla said. "You made it a place to threaten them."

"Calla."

"I am not finished." She had one hand on her chest, over the new scar, and her voice shook only a little. "I have been a girl in a hospital bed since I was nineteen. You were my whole family. I loved you, Grandmother. And you chose my donor because she would come back."
