Chapter 18: The Confession

Samantha's POV

Tobias stood at the top of the companionway holding a freezer bag of white tablets up to the camera.

His hand was shaking, and he did not lower it.

"These were in her bag," he said. "Over a hundred. There are six empty bottles and a sheet of labels with my wife's name."

Nobody on the boat said anything.

Finnegan's tablet had gone silent for the first time in three days.

Then Brynn came up the steps behind him, and she saw the red light, and she saw the lens.

I watched her decide, one more time, which face to wear.

None of them came.

"Sam," she said.

"Not me," I said. "Tell them."

She looked at the camera.

For a moment I thought she would cry her way out of it, with her shoulders going and her hand at her throat.

Instead her face went tired.

"The first month was an accident," she said.

Her voice was lower and flatter than I had ever heard it.

"Your dad had died in March. You weren't sleeping. Tobias called me from the kitchen at midnight because you wouldn't stop shaking, and I came over and held you until it passed. And I walked into that pharmacy the next day, and I filled the bottle, and I thought, she isn't ready. She can't have a baby right now. She can barely stand."

"That wasn't your call," I said.

"No."

"It was one month."

"It was one month," Brynn said. "And then there was another."

She turned to Tobias.

He had not moved.

"I've loved you since the second week of freshman year," she said. "I stood next to her at your wedding, and I held her flowers."
