Chapter 6: Signal Hill
I was in his lap before the engine had finished ticking, and I said it against his mouth.
"Should pregnancy occur, this agreement ends that day, and the Principal will bear the cost of ending it."
He went still under me.
"You know it by heart," he said.
"I read it twice before I signed," I said.
Nan Winnie had come at midnight in a taxi and her dressing gown.
She had looked once at the two of us in the hall and told us to go and shout at each other somewhere else.
So he had driven us to the top of Signal Hill.
The truck sat alone in the empty car park, with fog on every window and the tower dark above us.
Below the cliff the lights of the harbour lay spread under the cloud, orange and white.
The Narrows were black.
I had a knee on either side of his thighs on the driver's seat, and my hands on his face.
"You typed that," I said. "You chose the font."
"Millie."
"It's on page two, between the cheque dates and the clause about my phone."
"I wrote it before I knew you," he said.
"Then know me."
I kissed him.
I kissed him until he made a noise in his chest and his hands came up my back under my jumper.
His fingers were cold.
I pulled my jumper over my head and threw it into the back.
His eyes went to my bra and stayed there.
He bent his head and took my nipple in his mouth through the lace.
I ground down onto the hard length of him through his trousers and cried out.
I bit his ear.
I felt him jerk under me and heard him laugh, breathless, because I had found the place that undid him.
His hand slid up the inside of my thigh and pushed under the edge of my jeans.
"What did you think about," I said, "in the months after I left?"
"This."
"Be specific."
"Your mouth," he said. "Your hands on my chest. The noise you made when I put you on the kitchen counter the first time."
"The first time was a Tuesday."
"I know what day it was," he said, and bit my lip.
"Back seat," I said.
"It's a pickup."
"It's a crew cab. Move."
We went over the console in a tangle of elbows.
He banged his head on the roof and swore.
I laughed so hard I had to hold the seat.
He caught my face and kissed my laughing mouth, and the laugh went out of me altogether.
The back seat was wide and cold leather.
He sat in the middle with his knees apart and his back against the door.
I stood over him on the floor with my head bent under the ceiling.
"Hands on the headrest," I said.
"Millie, it's a truck."
"Up."
He put both hands behind his head and watched me.
I unhooked my bra and dropped it.
I undid my jeans, slowly, and pushed them down with my knickers, and stepped out.
