Chapter 8: The Scarf
I tied his left wrist to the iron bedstead with my grandmother's scarf, and he watched me do it.
The scarf was grey wool, nine feet long, knitted from the fleece of sheep she never named.
It had hung on a nail by her door for eleven years.
I had carried it up the stairs without telling him why.
Her saltbox stood next to my father's, at the end of the lane in Gannet Tickle.
The woodstove was going downstairs, and snow ticked against the window.
Sadie was asleep in my father's spare room, in a drawer lined with a quilt.
My father snored beside her.
I had made sure of that before I climbed the stairs.
"Rule two," Lorcan said.
"Be quiet," I said.
"I'm keeping the record straight."
"Give me your other hand," I said.
He gave it.
I knotted the right wrist as I had the left.
It was loose enough that he could not claim it hurt, and tight enough that he could not slip.
He lay naked on my grandmother's patchwork quilt with his arms stretched above his head.
The lamp showed me every inch of him.
I stood at the foot of the bed in my father's old flannel shirt and nothing under it.
"I have never," he said, "been tied to a bed."
"I know," I said.
"What are you going to do to me?"
"What I like," I said.
I climbed onto the bed, and the springs sang.
I knelt over his thighs and unbuttoned the flannel from the top.
One button, two, three.
I let it hang open and slide off my shoulders.
He pulled against the scarf, and the iron frame rang once.
"Millie," he said.
"Look all you want," I said.
"I am looking."
"Good boy," I said.
I had not planned to say it.
