Warner walked to the witness stand.
He raised his right hand, swore to tell the truth, and sat down under the seal of the state.
His new lawyer, a young man in a cheap suit, hovered at the rail with his mouth already open.
Camille's lawyer asked him four short questions about his mother.
"Who told Ms. Dunn the marriage had been annulled?"
"My mother."
"Who told her to stay quiet?"
"My mother."
"Who told you it was handled?"
"My mother," Warner said. "Every time."
In the front row, Constance did not move a single pearl.
Then the prosecutor stood, with the tired gray braid and no notes.
"Mr. Lowry, I only have a few questions, and you may decline to answer any of them."
"Your counsel has told you that, I assume."
"Objection," said the young lawyer. "My client has a right under the Fifth."
"He has the right," said the judge, "and he has just been reminded of it. Mr. Lowry?"
Warner looked at the jury.
He looked at the gallery, where I sat in the second row with Hattie's hand gripping mine.
He looked last at his mother.
"I'll answer," he said.
"The night of the dinner, you rode home with your mother. What did she say in the car?"
"She told me to say Willa had slipped."
"Did she say why?"
"She said if it held until the gala, the paper would stop mattering."
"Three weeks later, someone opened the evidence server at three in the morning, using your family's law firm's login."
"Who gave that order?"
Warner looked at his mother.
"She called the firm from my kitchen. I was standing there with a coffee."
"Did you object?"
"No."
"The morning after the gala, your company called Ms. Dunn a forger. Did you believe that?"
"No."
"Who approved the statement?"
"I did, at six-forty, before I drove to Greenwood Lake to ask Willa to say she'd been confused."
