Chapter 12: The Bank
On Monday morning I walked into the county bank with the letter in my fist and my sister at my elbow.
Jo had traded a shift for it.
She wore her best jacket, the black one, and her face said she had come to burn something down.
"Let me do the talking," she said.
"No."
"Let me do the shouting."
"Maybe."
The branch manager was a tired man in his fifties with a mustache and a paper cup of coffee.
He took us into a glass office and pulled the loan file up on his monitor.
"It was an online application with a notarized signature page," he said. "The notary stamp is from a mobile service. Everything matched your information."
"Matched what?" I said.
"Your date of birth, your Social Security number, your address."
"My husband knows all of those."
"Mrs. Colburn, I'm not suggesting."
"I'm suggesting it," I said. "Show me the signature page."
He turned the monitor.
My name was there in blue ink.
It was close, and it was wrong.
The D was rounder than mine, and the tail on the last s curled upward.
I had been signing the same way since I was fifteen.
"That's not my handwriting," I said.
"Ma'am, the notary witnessed it."
"The notary didn't meet me."
"The notary says she met a woman at your home address."
Jo made a noise in her throat.
"Which woman?" she said.
The manager looked uncomfortable.
"The notary described her as thirty or so, tall, dark hair in a ponytail."
I did not have to look at Jo.
I could feel her go very still beside me.
"Shelby," she said.
I sat with my hands on my knees.
