Chapter 16: The Cord

They went to the pavilion at sundown, and Su Lu watched them from an upstairs window.

Lu Chen saw her curtain move.

He kept walking.

Morbius was already there, seated on the stone bench with his hands folded.

He looked at the two of them, side by side with a hand's width between them.

"You have not touched each other since this morning," he said. "Good. It would be unkind to say this over a kiss."

Su Ye sat down on the opposite bench.

Lu Chen stayed on his feet.

"The cord," Su Ye said. "Why did it go cold?"

"I will tell you. It is not what you think."

Morbius turned his gray eyes on Lu Chen.

"I told you that you were sent back on my judgement. That is true. It is not the whole truth, and you have never asked what I left out."

"I assumed it was none of my business."

"It was entirely your business." Morbius's mouth softened. "Chen. When the Su family died, they came to my hall before you did."

Lu Chen's hands went numb.

"I judge the dead in the order they arrive. His grandfather was first, then his parents. Then Su Ye, in a gray suit, with his hand still on his throat."

Su Ye shut his eyes.

"I asked each of them what they wanted," Morbius said. "Every one of them wanted a different thing. Most asked for the poisoner to burn."

"And Su Ye?"

"He asked me about you."

The pond was very quiet.

"He knelt on the floor of my hall," Morbius went on, "in a dead man's suit. He told me you were an orphan. He told me nobody had ever read you a book. He told me you had been lied to, and that the lie was a very large one, and you were not clever enough to see it."
