Chapter 13: What He Said
Cal walked out of the room without a word.
I heard his shoes go down the hall, fast and even, and then the glass door at the end, and then nothing.
The aide put her face in her hands.
Lenore sat in the bed with the ticket stub on her knees and her eyes on the doorway where her son had gone.
"He'll come back," she said, in a small voice. "Won't he?"
"I don't know, Mrs. Reese," I said.
It was the truest thing I had said in that room.
I stood up.
Nolan Cormier had not moved from the chair at the foot of the bed.
His cap lay on the floor where it had fallen, and he was looking at it as if he could not think how to bend down.
I picked it up and put it in his hands.
"You should have found him," I said.
"I know it," Nolan said.
"You should have come to me when I was twenty."
"I know that too, Jo."
"I'm not going to say it's all right," I said.
"I didn't come to be told it was," he said.
I looked at his two ruined fingers, white on the brim, and I could not stay angry at him and could not stop either.
I went out through the day room into the parking lot.
The black SUV was where we had left it, with the driver standing beside it holding a phone against his chest.
"Mr. Reese took the car keys from me and walked," the driver said. "He said I was to take you wherever you wanted."
"Which way did he go?" I said.
"Toward the river, ma'am. He didn't say."
I opened the back door.
"Take me to Bayou La Batre," I said.
