Chapter 18: The Fair Eve
In July the dark never came.
It hung over the Ness in a long blue dusk that ran from sunset to sunrise without a break.
The islanders called it the simmer dim, and the loft was full of it.
I had the window open.
The sea smell came in, and the sound of the Wick, and somewhere down the road a fiddle at a late wedding.
I was naked on top of the quilt with my hair undone.
Erlend lay under me on my narrow bed with his hands flat on the mattress, because I had told him to keep them there.
He had kept them there for the whole of a long, slow kiss.
"Danika," he said against my mouth.
"Not yet," I said.
"I'm a patient man."
"You're a liar," I said.
I felt him laugh, and it ran through his whole chest into mine.
It was the eighth month since the shop, and the first I had heard him laugh without something behind it.
There had been seven months of the cooper's committee and the new book.
There had been the Lerwick sales, and the fiscal's letters that said nothing.
There had been seven months of nights in this bed, and in his, and once in the cold counting house.
I knew his body now the way I knew my own handwriting.
I knew what made him shut his eyes, and what made him say my name low in the back of his throat.
I knew that the scar on his arm was the place he liked to be kissed last.
I sat up on his hips.
His cock lay hard along my cunt, hot and heavy, and I rocked once, so that he slid through the wet of me and groaned.
"Say what you want," I said.
"You."
"That's not a thing."
"All of you." His eyes were open, pale in the blue light. "I want your mouth on mine and your hair in my face. I want to be inside you with the window open and the whole Ness listening."
