Chapter 20: The Hearth
The doorkeeper at the Cache House was one of Knut's enforcers, the one who had said sorry to me in the snow.
He stood in the doorway with his arms down and his eyes on the ground.
Behind him I could hear the low sound of two hundred people not speaking.
"Name," he said. His voice was rough.
He knew my name.
It was the rule of the door, the one the Kitchen had written before anyone's grandmother was born.
Each wolf gave a name to the doorkeeper at a Naming, and the doorkeeper said it aloud to the hall.
I stood on the step in the red dusk with my hair loose over my shoulders and my bare neck in the cold.
Axel's hand rested on my nape.
His thumb moved once against the top of my spine.
"Natalya Kuzmin," I said. "Nose of this pack. Mate of Axel Brandvik."
The enforcer's head came up.
He looked at me, and at the mark on my shoulder where my collar had slipped.
