Chapter 9: The Basket
On the seventh morning I sat on the chopping block in the woodshed and watched Axel split birch.
He had his coat off and his sleeves pushed to the elbow.
The axe went up and came down, and the round of wood sprang apart on the stump with a crack.
He set the halves on end and split them again.
The shed smelled of birch bark and cold.
It was the only smell anywhere near him, and it was not his.
I had been watching for twenty minutes, and my heat had been rising for nineteen.
"Axel."
"Mm," he said.
"Put the axe down."
He split another round.
The muscles in his back rolled under the flannel.
"I need the wood for tonight."
"You need me for tonight."
He stopped with the axe in the air.
Then he lowered it, slowly, and sank the blade into the stump, and turned around.
His face was already different.
"Come here," I said.
He crossed the shed in three strides.
I was sitting on the edge of the block with my knees apart, in a long coat and nothing else, and I opened the coat.
His eyes dropped.
He took a breath through his nose.
"You walked out here with nothing on under that?"
"It's just outside the cabin," I said.
