Chapter 11: The Drawer

Yuheng was gone by morning.

Mingzhou found out from Ou Jin, who stood at the foot of the stairs holding an envelope.

"Singapore," Ou Jin said. "A port deal. He took the six o'clock flight and he'll be back Friday."

"He didn't wake me."

"He left this."

Mingzhou took the envelope and opened it on the stairs.

There was a single sheet of Qin Group paper inside, and a line of black handwriting.

I will explain. Not by phone. Please don't leave the house.

He read it twice.

"Ou Jin," he said. "How does he know the name Ye?"

Ou Jin's face did not change.

It was a very practised face, and Mingzhou, who had been watching it for eight months, saw it settle into stillness.

"That isn't mine to say, Mr. Xia."

"Is it true?" Mingzhou asked.

"I'm not able to answer."

"That isn't a no."

"No," Ou Jin agreed gently. "It isn't."

He bowed and went away down the hall.

Mingzhou spent the day in a state he could not name.

He walked from room to room. He ate half a bowl of rice. He sat at the piano for an hour without touching it.
