Chapter 20: The Emperor's Apology
The Emperor's private study was a small room with a good fire and a window onto the palace gardens.
Thessaly chose the chair nearest the door.
Eskil had stayed on the other side of it, in the corridor, with the door open a hand's breadth.
She had asked that, not him.
Lysander poured wine for her and she did not touch it.
He stood with his back to the fire and his hands behind him, as he had stood at fourteen when he was about to confess to some small crime.
"I have rehearsed this," he said. "For five years. I thought I would say it better."
"Say it as it comes."
"I was wrong."
She waited.
"I was wrong at the Ball, and I was wrong at the inn, and I was wrong in the snow."
"I was a boy who had never been told no, and you told me, and I was too proud to hear it."
"I knelt in a courtyard and thought it a grand gesture," he said.
