Chapter 22: The Hall of Peers
Eskil had said very little since the glass gallery.
He had walked her back to her rooms, kissed her forehead once, and gone to fetch the chest from the post house, because the Law of Open Grievance needed paper.
The Hall of Peers sat in open session two days later, with the doors thrown wide so the capital could stand in the courtyard and listen.
Two hundred peers in grey and scarlet filled the benches.
On the high seat sat the Emperor, pale, with the Empress on his left in a plain white dress with no pearls.
The High Chancellor, an old man with a voice like a dry door, struck his staff.
"The Queen's Envoy has asked to be heard under the Law of Open Grievance."
Thessaly stood in the center of the floor in the red of Sunhallow.
Eskil stood at her shoulder.
She did not look at the Empress.
"My lords," she said. "Five years ago the Queen of Sunhallow marched on the North because she received a letter. I have it here."
