Chapter 28: The Second Contract
"Yes," Thessaly said.
She said it before the last word was out of his mouth, and then she said it again, into his shoulder, because he had gone quiet.
"Yes. On my terms."
"I would hope so."
"I will write them myself. This time you may not have the pen," she said.
"I would not dare."
She wrote them that afternoon at her mother's desk, with the window open and a plum branch scratching the glass.
She wrote them for two hours, and Eskil sat on the floor with his back against her chair and read each line over her shoulder.
The next morning, they were sealed in the Hall of Peers.
The Emperor had offered the throne room.
Thessaly had said the Hall would do, because it was where the Empire told the truth.
The same Imperial clerk, now five years older and no less furious, sat at the end of the long table with his quill.
"I was woken from bed for the first one," he told the room, bitterly. "At least this time I have had breakfast."
