After that, everything happened at once and very slowly.
The nurse was across the room before the note had finished.
She spoke urgently into the wall phone, and the room filled with people.
"Family out," someone said. "Please. Family to the hall."
I did not move.
A hand took my elbow, and then another, and my feet went backward across the floor without me.
Bev had me by the shoulders.
Dane was already in the hall.
He stood with his back against the opposite wall and both palms flat on it, as if the building were falling.
Through the glass I watched them gather around my son.
The surgeon came running in his socks.
He had been asleep on a couch down the hall, and he did not stop to put on shoes.
