At six they asked me to leave the room so they could prepare him.
That was the word they used.
Prepare.
Bev walked me down the hall to the family room and sat me on the couch.
The couch was still warm from yesterday.
Someone had left a yellow knitted thing on the arm.
It was Bev's, shapeless and unfinished, and I understood now it was meant to be a blanket.
Dane came in a few minutes later and stood by the window.
He had not shaved, and the shirt was buttoned wrong from the night before.
Neither of us said anything.
At a quarter to seven the door opened without a knock.
Ingrid came in, in her camel coat, with Demi half a step behind.
Demi wore black, and nothing about her was out of place.
"Dane," Ingrid said. "Oh, my darling."
She crossed the room and took his face in her hands.
He did not lift his arms.
