Dane's old oncologist kept her office on the sixth floor, behind a door with a plain brass plate.
I got there at eight, still in yesterday's clothes, with the lab report in my hand.
She was a small woman in her sixties with white hair cut short.
She looked at me over her glasses, and her face changed.
"Ms. Brewer," she said. "I am so sorry. The whole building knows."
"I have a question about a lab report."
"Of course. Sit."
I handed her the second page and pointed at the gray box.
She read it, and her eyebrows rose slowly.
"Whose specimen?"
"Dane Rowland's."
The door opened behind me.
I did not need to turn around.
"I followed you up," Dane said. His voice was gone to gravel. "I don't know where else to go."
"Dane," the oncologist said, still reading. "Sit down."
He sat in the chair beside mine.
We did not look at each other.
"A paternity test," she said. "On a blood sample."
