Chapter 17: What Demi Signed
I did not go back to him that morning.
I went to the records office with Bev and signed my name in the places they showed me.
A woman in a gray cardigan slid each form across the counter with both hands.
At nine I took the stairs down to the atrium, because I could not make myself stand in another elevator.
Dane was at the foot of the big staircase under the banner for the new wing.
He had two sheets of paper in one hand.
He didn't see me, or he did and decided I could stay.
The foundation staff were filing across the marble for their weekly meeting.
There were about twenty of them, in lanyards, with coffees.
Demi came in through the revolving door at nine exactly, in black, with her phone in her hand.
She saw him and slowed.
"Dane. I'm so sorry about this morning. Your mother was overwrought."
"Demi."
"I want to help. Whatever you need."
"Read this."
He held out the first sheet.
She took it, glanced at it, and her face did nothing at all.
