"Friends?" I said. "He asked you if I'd made friends?"

"His lawyer did." Joanna was out of breath. "A very nice man with a very smooth voice. He said Tripp was worried about you being lonely. He said if you'd mentioned anyone, I should tell him, so they could look out for you."

"Look out for me."

"Rochelle, I'm a nurse. I know what 'we're concerned' sounds like when it isn't concern."

"What did you say?"

"I said you were an adult, and I hung up. Then I called you six times." She paused. "Are you eating?"

"I'm eating."

"Are you okay?"

I looked down the pier.

Tripp stood at the far end with Camille, looking at his phone, and Rhett was nowhere.

"I'm better than I was," I said, and I heard how that sounded.

"Uh-huh," my sister said. "Is there someone?"

"Joanna."

"Is there someone, and is he decent, and has he met a lawyer?"

"I'll call you tomorrow."

"Check your prenup," Joanna said. "I mean it. Tripp made you sign it before you had your own lawyer, and I told you at the time. Read it tonight."

I stood a moment with the phone against my chest.

Then I walked up to my room, locked the door, and opened my email.

It took me fifteen minutes to find it.

It had been sitting in a folder since the week we married, a PDF named Final_v4, forty pages long, in the kind of legal language I had never bothered to read.

I scrolled to the middle and found the clause on page twenty-two.

Article 9. Marital Fidelity.

If the Wife is found to have engaged in a sexual relationship with any person other than the Husband during the marriage, all shares held in her name in Draycott Outfitters shall revert to the Husband, without compensation.
