Chapter 5: One Way

Gavin insisted on driving me to the airport himself.

"You'll want to see everyone off properly," Corinna said sweetly, and got into the front seat before he could ask.

I sat in the back with one suitcase and my mother's folder on my lap.

At the departures curb Gavin lifted my bag out of the trunk.

Corinna stood beside him, holding her coat closed against the wind.

"Text us when you land," she said. "Please. I'd feel so much better."

"I won't text you," I said.

Gavin's mouth went flat.

"Callie."

I took a long envelope from the folder and put it in his hands.

"Read it now."

He pulled out the pages.

"What is this?"

"A separation agreement. I signed it the day before you handed me that ticket."

Corinna leaned in to read over his arm, and he turned the pages away from her.

A woman pushing a luggage cart slowed down to watch.

"We're not separated," Gavin said. "We're not even"

He stopped.

"You can't separate from someone you were never married to," I said. "So I'm told. Sign it anyway, or frame it. It's the only thing in our house with your name next to mine."

His face went through three expressions and settled on none of them.

"You're being childish."

"I have one more thing for you."

I took the folded sign out of my bag and pressed it flat against his chest.
