Chapter 13: The Ante-Room
Lenore was in the Council ante-room, knitting, when I came in to sign my statement.
She sat on the long bench under the window with her basket at her feet and the afternoon light on her hair.
She looked up and smiled.
"Sweetheart. They told me you'd be here at three."
I shut the door behind me.
I had my father's sixteenth letter folded in my coat pocket. I had asked him for it that morning, and he had given it to me without a word.
"The supper is cancelled," Lenore said. "After that business in the yard, I thought it was kinder. Come and sit. You look thin."
"I found the letters, Lenore."
Her needles kept moving for two more stitches.
Then they stopped.
"Which letters, dear?"
"Sixteen of them. Sealed, with your stamp across the front. And one reply, in your handwriting, saying I was buried."
She looked at me for a long time.
I had thought she would deny it. I had practiced what I would say to her denial.
She set her knitting in the basket instead, and folded her hands.
"Well," she said. "I always thought it would be the post that did it."
"That's all you have to say?"
"No." Her eyes filled. "I have a great deal to say, and none of it will make you listen."
"Try."
"You were a child in a tent with a wolf-crest scarf and a silver pendant, and I knew whose you were before the medic finished his form." She said it softly. "Ronan Ashdown is a hard man in a cold hold. He would have kept you at the border with a spear in your hand."
