Chapter 15: The Reporter on the Steps
Odette was standing at the top of the Council steps with a man holding a notebook.
Her cream coat was creased, and the hem was gray with road dust.
Two days ago she had been the woman who sat in my chair.
Now she had plainly slept on a train.
"There she is," Odette said, loud enough for the whole square. "Ask her yourself."
The man with the notebook wrote for a living. His press badge said the Capital Courier.
A small crowd had stopped on the pavement below. Clerks, a flower seller, two guards off duty.
My father came out of the east door behind me. He put himself one step back and to my left and said nothing.
I was glad of him.
"Luna Winslow," the reporter said. "Miss Delamere says you have known for years that you were Ronan Ashdown's heir. She says you hid it so you could marry the northern seat."
"Did she."
"She says you took the Winslow name to stay close to the pass."
Odette lifted her chin.
I understood, then, that she was frightened. Her hands were shaking inside her sleeves.
"Miss Delamere," I said, "I was eight years old in a tent. Who told you I knew?"
"Everyone knows it."
"Who told you?"
"It's common knowledge."
"It wasn't common knowledge in my own house. Where did you hear it?"
She opened her mouth.
The reporter's pencil hung over the page.
"Somebody who loves this family," Odette said.
"Did she bring you a basket?"
Odette went quiet.
I saw it land. I saw her think of a kind voice and a neat, round hand.
"She came to my sister's door," Odette said slowly.
"When?"
"Two nights after I left. She was lovely. She said I'd been treated shamefully." Her voice had gone thin. "She said I deserved my day in front of the pack."
