Chapter 14: A Very Sad Afternoon
It took the police forty minutes to find out they were in the wrong building of a very large story.
They stood us on four different landings so we couldn't hear each other.
I told mine once, plainly, from the first shove to the slap.
The officer wrote it down and asked to see the videos.
Toby ran down the steps and held out his phone.
The officer watched Inez's palm come up toward my chest.
He watched it skid off my bag strap, and he watched Tristram's hand close on her arm.
"That's a push," he said. "Or a reach."
"It's a push," Ethan said. "I was standing next to her."
"You were standing next to her," the officer agreed. "And you're on her side, which I have to write down."
He looked at me.
"You can see my problem, ma'am."
Footsteps came up from the lobby, unhurried and expensive.
Inez's lawyer had been waiting in the black sedan the whole time.
He shook the officer's hand and smiled.
"Mrs. Nordin is sixty-three years old," he said. "She came to speak to her daughter-in-law, who has been legally declared unwell by her own doctors."
"The judge denied that this morning," Ethan said.
"The judge declined to rule on it today. That's different."
He turned the phone toward the light.
"What this shows is an elderly woman reaching for a bag. Her son grabbed her. She struck him in fear. I'd call that a very sad family afternoon, not a crime."
Inez, a few steps up, touched a handkerchief to her eye.
She had cried on cue at my wedding too.
"I won't press anything," she said, in a small voice. "I only want my boy to get help."
