Floyd's POV
Hollis Sound was on the second floor of a brick building in the Short North, over a tattoo parlor.
I had climbed those stairs by the rail for three years.
Tonight I took them two at a time and saw every step.
The owner was alone in the mixing room, with a headset around his neck and a cold sandwich beside the board.
He looked up, and I watched him decide whether to be glad to see me.
"Floyd," he said. "I was going to call you. Have you seen the thing online?"
"I've seen it."
"Two hundred thousand people think you're a con man."
"I know. I came to tell you they're half right."
He took off the headset.
"Sit down," he said.
I stayed standing.
I had written the speech on the bus and thrown it away at the first stop.
"I got my sight back in April," I said. "Two surgeries. I didn't tell my girlfriend, and I didn't tell you. I kept working for you as a blind editor for eight months."
He said nothing.
"Your catalogue lists me as the accessibility voice. You pay a premium rate on every title I cut, because of that. You've sold three libraries on it."
"We have."
"I took the premium after April. It was six thousand two hundred dollars." I put an envelope on the board next to the sandwich. "That's a cashier's check. It's not from Brinley's account. It's mine."
He looked at the envelope and not at me.
"I could have taken it back out of your next invoice," he said.
"You could. I wanted you to have it first."
