Chapter 22: One Month

Brinley's POV

"Yes," Floyd said. "I paid it."

I set the coffee cup down.

"When?"

"Saturday afternoon."

"Where did the money come from? You had four hundred dollars. You told me that on Wednesday."

"I sold the microphone."

I stared at him across the kitchen table.

He didn't look away, and he didn't try to make it sound smaller.

"The one in the closet," I said. "The one you cut every book on."

"Yes."

"It's the only thing you owned that you loved."

"You were not supposed to know that."

I heard the hum of the refrigerator, and the pipes in the wall.

I stood up, because I could not sit.

"You told me," I said, "in front of the restaurant, on my birthday, that you would tell me the truth. About everything, immediately. Not in a month, not when you'd worked out how to say it nicely."

"I know what I said."

"Saturday was two days ago."

"I know."

"You planned it for two days."

"I decided it wasn't the same kind of thing," he said, and then he closed his eyes. "That's not true. I knew it was. I told myself it was a gift, and I knew."

"You chose to keep it in the drawer."

"Yes."

"You did it again, Floyd."

My voice shook, and I let it.

"A man decides what I should have. He pays for it quietly, behind my back, because he thinks I can't be trusted with the choice. He calls it love. And I find out from a receipt stapled to a lease."

"I didn't do it to keep you."

"You did it to be the one who gave."

He didn't deny it.

That was the worst part.

I wanted him to argue so I could throw the cup.
