Chapter 5: Brasher Audio

"Show me," I said.

Hank took his phone from his shirt pocket and opened the library app his wife used.

He typed the name into the search box with one slow finger.

A list came up, and I leaned across the divider to read it.

There were more than a hundred titles.

Mysteries, a cookbook read by an actress, and a long novel about a ferry in the fog.

There were two romances with the same shirtless man on the cover.

Under each one, in the small grey print, it said: Edited and mastered by Brasher Audio.

"My wife says the good ones all sound clean," Hank said. "She says you never hear a breath or a chair squeak. She listens to them every night."

I thought about the headphones.

For three years Floyd had worn big black headphones on the couch every night after I went to bed.

I had thought he was listening to books.

His laptop sat open on his knees, and I heard keys tapping softly while I fell asleep.

I had thought he was typing messages to his mother.

"He wasn't listening," I said. "He was working."

"Probably," Hank said gently. "I'm not saying it was enough money. I'm saying it wasn't nothing."

"I have a spreadsheet," I said. "I have every receipt for three years. I worked through a pulled back muscle so I could pay for his physical therapy."
