Chapter 4: Say It Loud

I went back to the Iron Hollow at two the next afternoon, when the lot was empty except for four bikes.

I wanted Brandi alone, and I wanted a few witnesses.

Mace had said I shouldn't go, and then he had said he'd wait outside.

He leaned against the wall by the door with his arms crossed, and he did not follow me in.

The bar was dim and smelled of old beer and floor polish.

Three older men sat at the far end with their coffee, the ones the club called the Old Guard, and they stopped talking when I walked in.

Brandi stood at the taps in a clean white tank top, wiping the same pump handle for the third time.

Her eyes were red.

She saw me and went completely still.

"Mallory." She put the rag down. "I don't want a fight."

"I don't either. I want you to tell me what he told you."

"Who?"

"My husband."

The three old men looked into their cups.

Brandi's mouth worked.

"He told me you two were done," she said. "That you'd moved out in the spring and it was just paperwork."

"And you believed that?"

"He wore his ring everywhere, I know. He said it was for his father." Her voice thinned. "He told me you were living at your mother's old place, and you didn't want to talk about it."

My mother's place had been sold three years ago, to pay for her hospital bills.
